Cast iron drain pipes corrode because bacteria in decomposing waste release hydrogen sulfide gas, which a second group of bacteria on the damp pipe walls above the waterline oxidises into sulfuric acid. The pipe is chemically etched from within rather than simply rusting, and because the acid forms above the flow, the top of a horizontal run typically fails before the bottom. Cast iron is not a defective material, but its service life is finite and its condition can only be established by running a camera inside the line.
If a home built before the mid-1970s still has its original drain lines, they are probably cast iron. The question buyers ask next is usually some version of "is that bad?" — and the honest answer is that cast iron is not a defective material. It is a material with a finite service life, and a lot of it is now at the end of it.
What makes cast iron worth understanding before you buy is that it fails from the inside out, on a timeline nobody can see from the basement.
Cast iron drain lines are usually visible where they leave the house, in a basement or crawl space, and occasionally at a cleanout.
Plastic drain pipe — white PVC or black ABS — is unmistakably different: light, smooth, non-magnetic, and printed with markings along its length.
Age is the other clue. Cast iron was the standard for residential drain, waste, and vent lines in the United States until plastic displaced it through the 1970s. A house built before roughly 1975 that has never had its drains replaced almost certainly has it.
This is where cast iron differs from most building materials that simply wear out. It is attacked chemically, by a process the sewage itself creates.
Inside a drain line, waste sits and decomposes in an oxygen-poor environment. Anaerobic bacteria in that waste reduce sulfates into sulfides, and some of that becomes hydrogen sulfide gas, which rises into the air space above the flow. That gas is the rotten-egg smell associated with sewers.
On the damp pipe walls above the waterline live a different group of bacteria, of the genus Thiobacillus. They oxidise that hydrogen sulfide into sulfuric acid, directly on the surface of the pipe.
So a cast iron drain is not merely rusting. It is being etched by acid that the sewage below it is continuously manufacturing.
This produces a very specific and counterintuitive failure pattern.
Because the acid forms on the moist surfaces above the flow, the upper portion of a horizontal run corrodes faster than the submerged bottom. This is known as crown corrosion. A pipe can look sound from underneath while its top is thinning toward failure.
It is one reason a visual inspection from a basement is close to worthless for judging cast iron. The failing surface is inside, facing up, out of sight.
Corrosion products build into hard rust nodules on the interior wall, called tubercles. They narrow the effective diameter, catch solids and paper, and turn a pipe that once drained freely into one that clogs repeatedly. Recurrent blockages in an older home are frequently a symptom of this, not of misuse.
Where the pipe bottom does erode, it can wear into a groove that eventually opens, letting waste escape into the soil beneath the slab or basement floor. Because the leak is below the floor, this often shows up first as a smell, a damp patch, or settlement, rather than as visible water.
Not inherently, and it is worth being precise here because the answer changes what you should do.
Cast iron is strong, quiet — noticeably quieter than plastic when water runs through it — and fire resistant. It was a genuinely good material, and plenty of it has performed for decades without incident. Nothing about its presence makes a house unsafe or unsellable.
What matters is that its life is finite and largely predetermined by conditions you cannot inspect: how aggressive the waste stream has been, how much the line sits in standing water, soil chemistry outside the pipe, and how well it was installed and sloped in the first place.
Published service-life figures for cast iron drain lines vary widely, and the ranges most often quoted come from plumbing contractors rather than from any public dataset. Rather than repeat a number we cannot trace, the useful framing is this: the material is old enough in most pre-1975 homes that condition, not age, is the thing to establish — and condition can only be established by looking inside.
So the correct question is not "are cast iron pipes bad" but "what condition is this cast iron in, and can I see evidence of it before I commit."
